How Would You Describe Africa?
A few weekends ago, I had the honour to be a part of an event focused on getting youths of African descent more engaged in the African community. It was a good opportunity to glean, from these youths, what would enable them become more involved in African issues and since I’m always curious to know what people think about Africa, I decided to conduct a little experiment of my own.
I had a few attendees give me one word that comes to mind when they think of Africa. Below are what I received:
Corruption Plantains Progressive Culture
Lion King Beauty Freedom Home
Unknown Light Elephant Lagos
Poverty Green Tribal Nature
Sun Madagascar Beautiful Safari
Purity Healthful Food Ineptitude
Developing Backward Continent Big
Africans Tragedy Potential Rich
In my mind, all of the words paint a picture of a continent with character and personality – tons of it – and this is really true of the continent and the people as there is a myriad of languages, dialects, foods, cultures and customs. What word springs to mind when you think of Africa?
